The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular Nigerian Instagram celebrity Pascal Okechukwu, famously known as Cubana Chief Priest.
Enomaomoruyi.com learned on Sunday from a source(identity withheld) that Mr Okechukwu was apprehended by operatives on Wednesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The Instagram celebrity was arrested at the airport on his way to Owerri, the capital of Imo State, according to sources who asked not to be identified because they did not have permission to speak publicly on the matter.
The source said “We have a popular Instagram celebrity in our custody in Abuja. He is known as Cubana Chief Priest. He was arrested on Wednesday, in Abuja on his way to Owerri,”
Attempts to contact the EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, were futile.
Though the allegations against the Instagram celebrity were sketchy at the time of publication,
Pascal Okechukwu was being questioned by Commission operatives about alleged money laundering and fraud.
Mr Okechukwu’s disappearance sparked outrage from a variety of sources after the socialite had been silent on Instagram for several days, particularly because he had not responded to posts about his birthday wishes.
Cubana Chief priest was last seen publicly on television at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium in Abuja last Tuesday during a FIFA World Cup qualifier match between Ghana and Nigeria.
Months ago his friend and business associate Obinna Iyiegbu, famously known as Obi Cubana, was apprehended by EFCC agents in connection with an alleged money laundering and tax fraud case.
Mr . Okechukwu and Mr . Iyiegbu, both socialites, made headlines last July when they gathered with friends in Oba village, Anambra State, Nigeria’s south-east, for the burial of Mr Iyiegbu’s late mother.
During the burial, Obi Cubana’s friends frequently threw bundles of naira bills into the air and at him, among other gifts presented to him in a variety of forms.
Footages from the ceremony, which were widely shared on social media, elicited a mixed reaction from Nigerians, with some questioning Mr Cubana’s financial sources and others defending him as a “kind and generous man” who worked hard to achieve success.
